Over the years, I’ve dialed in a small but solid set of tools that come with me on every mountain bike ride. I’m not trying to be the shop mechanic on the trail, but I do want to be able to fix most common issues quickly and keep rolling. Here’s what’s always in my kit and why I carry it:
Pedro’s Tire Lever
Simple, sturdy, and reliable. I’ve broken cheaper levers before, but the Pedro’s lever has held up to everything I’ve thrown at it. It’s got just enough flex to get under a tight bead without snapping.
Two CO2 Canisters + Inflator Head
I usually run tubeless, but in the event of a flat that requires a tube, CO2 gets me back up to pressure fast. Two canisters give me a backup in case I mess up the first one or need to help a friend. The inflator head is compact and threads on securely without any drama.
Dynaplug® Racer Plug Kit
For small punctures that sealant can’t handle, the Dynaplug Racer is a lifesaver. It’s fast, easy to use, and plugs the hole without having to unseat the tire or mess around with messy patches. I keep it within easy reach — because when you need it, you want it now.
Spare Tube
Even with a tubeless setup, I carry a tube for worst-case scenarios: torn sidewalls, big blowouts, or sealant that just gives up. It’s a simple insurance policy that can turn a hike out into a quick trailside fix. On big rides like the Whole Enchilada in Moab, I carry two and have used them all!
Wolf Tooth Master Link Combo Pliers Multi-Tool
This thing is brilliant. It’s master link pliers, valve core remover, and more all in one. It makes it easy to remove the masterlink and it also carries a couple of quick links tucked inside the handles, so I’ve always got a spare ready. It’s saved me more than once when a chain unexpectedly gave up mid-ride.
Crankbrothers M19 Multi-Tool
There are a lot of multitools out there, but the M19 has been a staple in my pack for years. It’s compact, has everything I need (including a chain breaker and it doesn’t rattle around or fall apart like some cheaper options. Hex keys, screwdrivers, Torx it’s all there.
This setup covers 99% of the problems I’ve run into on the trail, from flats to loose bolts to broken chains. It all fits in my hip pack and doesn’t weigh me down. Could I carry more? Sure. But this is the balance I’ve found between being prepared and not hauling around a full shop.
